NIE is a Spanish identification number for foreigners, used in matters including taxation and property. As a foreign buyer, you normally need it for the tax and authority procedures involved in a purchase. It is not a residence permit or proof of residence.
Good to know
The information is for guidance only and does not replace individual legal or tax advice.
If you live in Sweden, a separate NIE application may be submitted through Spain's embassy in Stockholm under its jurisdiction and document requirements. Elsewhere, contact the Spanish consular representation responsible for your place of residence. In Spain, apply to the competent foreigners' office or police unit under local procedures. EU/EEA registration for stays longer than three months is a separate process in Spain, normally using EX-18 rather than a standalone EX-15 NIE application.
Processing and appointment waiting times vary between application routes and cases. Ask the receiving office for current information and allow a margin; there is no general delivery time.
You can apply yourself, but many choose help because the process requires the right forms, appointment and documentation.
